What advice would you
give a high school student
Who is about to go to college?
Don't go to college.
-joking-
College is not the only way; we have plenty of paths we can follow and still be successful and happy individuals. You can graduate from a good career like engineering and still be unemployed or maybe have a PYME and actually earn a good amount of money; or maybe you have a good career and feel miserable or on the other hand be a random barista guy/girl and be the happiest person in life.
Take it easy, college is hard. Even in arts where the teachers are really a softie and the time runs slowly compared to other careers, we still experience a good amount of stress, and I think the most of it comes from our expectations with the career. So… take it easy. Having a teacher or a subject that you dislike it's mostly a universal experience, so don’t blame your choice if you feel awkward with college, that's just normal.
Don’t base your decision In how easy a career can sound, because it doesn't exist; And don't make your choice based on how much money you can earn. Today we don't have anything assured. I know unemployed electrical engineers and friends with "PYMES" that have a monthly income bigger than my university debt, so do what you feel is right and do your best with it.
Ok, that's all I have in mind. Maybe I'm wrong.

ReplyDeleteI think that other advice is learn to study. In School i almost didin´t stuided. In College all i do is study. Jajaj :(
I share a lot what you say! Society has been in charge of convincing us that the only way to success is to go to university, which is a mistake. Our success and our happiness depend on many things, and as you say none of them is assured. The pressure of to enter university should only exist for those who really want to study a university degree and not because of an external issue.

ReplyDeleteI agree very much, certainly formal education is not the only way to achieve success, college should not be an obligation for anyone, there are many options nowadays.
ReplyDeleteGreat advices! If someone had told me that University isn't all, maybe I would have join an Academy in learn everything about Dance on my own, but I had that idea that the "title" will give me more options to develop my vocation. Don't get me wrong, I love my career but sometimes is good to know that you have more options.

ReplyDeleteI am totally agree with you, in these days are so many options. I have a big brother that he did not go to the university but he have a good job and he enjoy it a lot.
